Hundreds of black “spiders” discovered on Mars

The phenomenon was noticed in the region of the south pole of Mars known as the “City of the Incas.” The pictures show hundreds of black spots with small thin stripes extending in all directions. It is noted that such formations are formed as a result of seasonal changes on Mars. “These little dark streaks form when spring sunlight hits layers of carbon dioxide deposited during the winter months,” the experts explained.

This causes the lower layers of dry ice to turn into gas. It accumulates and breaks through the overlying ice, bringing up dark dust from the hard surface with it. It is this dust that settles on the surface of the planet and creates a spider-like pattern. The diameter of the dark spots ranges from 45 meters to one kilometer.

Previously, scientists at the University of Arizona proved that the planet Mars in the recent past was more geologically active than previously thought. Researchers have identified more than 40 volcanic eruptions, with one of the largest flows filling a flow channel called Athabasca Valles with regarding 4,000 cubic kilometers of basalt, and other eruptions filling the Cerberus Fissure area with more than 10,000 cubic kilometers of lava.
