Hundred Reasons come along following almost 16 years Glorious Sunset, a comeback that sounds unfashionable in the best sense of the word and constructed as a direct connection to the phase following the millennium change.
She already swore by the emo roots of her great early phase Quick The Word, Sharp The Action mostly off, now the British are rising Glorious Sunset even more consistently in radio-friendly alternative rock.
Solid and largely without any absolute harshness, the return of Colin Doran and Co. (the still youthful intonation, sometimes even pressing like Jonathan Davis) is, strictly speaking, generic genre fare, fundamentally unspectacular and composed with few surprises, perhaps even showing a cultivated gentleness of age and moving away from the title song opener, a bit like the stylish (also: less stadium-sized, schmaltzy pathos) equivalent to 30 Seconds to Mars and Co. functioning, indirectly next to it Black Map.
In this respect, the 10 songs (over a very entertaining 37 minutes) are disarmingly effective in their will to create a euphoric atmosphere of optimism, devotedly authentic, and the poppy choruses also ignite in a barrier-free manner. The density of small, catchy semi-hits like New Glasses or The Old School Way It simply catches the ear well and has a latent hymn-like quality, it’s not cramped or outdated, although unfortunately it’s produced far too smoothly, but it’s definitely gripping and entertaining.
Even if Replicate relies primarily on piano and strings or Done If you treat yourself to a somewhat cliched symphonic finale, it is always in such good taste that, understandably, no one needs to worry seriously regarding things like the quickly fading appeal or the resulting short half-life.
