Humanity’s first successful Earth defense test… “Changing Asteroid Orbit by Impact”

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has announced that the first asteroid defense test has been successful, which changes the orbit of a spacecraft by colliding a spacecraft with an asteroid in the course of colliding with the Earth.

NASA announced on the 11th local time and confirmed the change in the orbit of the asteroid that collided with the Dart spacecraft on the 26th of last month, and announced that mankind changed the motion of the celestial body for the first time. The explanation is that the asteroid orbital period was shortened by 30 minutes from 11 hours 55 minutes to 11 hours 23 minutes.

For this test, NASA launched a vending machine-sized dart spacecraft on a Falcon 9 rocket in November last year, and on the 26th of last month it collided with the asteroid Dymorphus, 11.2 million km from Earth.

The results will be used to formulate a strategy to defend Earth from asteroids approaching the Earth.
