The Al Jazeera region last year became a refuge for thousands of people fleeing violence in the capital Khartoum.

Today, of these half a million displaced people, nearly 234,000 had previously sought refuge in this region and were displaced a second time, following the explosion of violence in Al Jazeera on December 15, 2023, according to the press release from OCHA which cites reports from the UN Migration Agency (OIM).

A shortage of basic foodstuffs

Around 275,000 – or 54% of the total affected people – were displaced for the first time, and are from the localities of Medani Al Kurba and Sharg Al Jazeera in Al Jazeera State.

Separately, roads leading to villages east of Al Jazeera, including Sharg Al Neel in Khartoum State, were cut, and traders had to use alternative routes to deliver supplies. In addition, livestock owners would face significant shortages of animal feed, and thousands of animals risk being lost, according to theOCHA.

Children and families flee on foot from Wad Madani, Al Jazeera state, following clashes.

Under these conditions, the UN humanitarian arm has warned that more than 270,000 people are in need of humanitarian assistance in the Al Jazeera region and that 179,000 people are food insecure.

This situation has led to a shortage of basic foodstuffs and, according to OCHA, prices have tripled, while fuel has quadrupled. Since the start of the year, humanitarian organizations have helped 730,000 people in Al Jazeera with food, healthcare and other interventions.

Insecurity, main operational challenge

While many displaced people have sought refuge in relatively safer locations in Al Jazeera (around 205,000 people), UN agencies have reported that 60% of the total affected people – or more than 300,000 displaced people – have fled to other places. other states of Sudan. The displaced people from Al Jazeera were observed in the states of Gedaref (64,000), Sennar (60,000), Red Sea (50,000), or White Nile (40,000).

On the ground, insecurity remains the main operational challenge in Al Jazeera State, with humanitarian missions suspended since December 15, 2023 and virtually no humanitarian partners operating in Wad Medani, with the conflict still ongoing.

However, a partner of the World Food Program (PAM) operates nutrition services with limited capacity in Al Managil and Hassahisa, covering Supplementary Feeding Programs (SFP). According to OCHA, NGOs also deployed teams to conduct rapid needs assessments in Sennar, Gedaref and White Nile states.
