Madrid, Jul 22 (EFE).- As part of the program to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the Madrid College of Physicians (ICOMEM), the conference ‘Humanism and Ethical Challenges in Health in the 21st Century’ will be held on November 24, where doctors, pharmacists, lawyers and patients will stand up to the dehumanization of medicine.

During the meeting, the ethical and dehumanization consequences in health care due to the application of new technologies, such as artificial intelligence, big data, or genomics, will be analyzed, the College explained in a statement.

The conference, which will take place in the ICOMEM Grand Amphitheatre, will feature a panel of more than twenty international and national experts from the United States, Canada, Europe and Spain, according to the collegiate institution.

It is a free conference, online and in person, which will end with the screening of the documentary “Dying on the mountain. Dying in the city”, which will be presented by its director, Iñaki Peña.

During the day, the main ethical challenges of modern health care will be delved into through various tables, which will begin with the one dedicated to “Ethical Values, Science and Health”, in which special attention will be paid to vulnerable situations.

On the other hand, the table of “Bioethics and Contemporary Society” will take place, in which the point of view of the patients, the situation of dependency, the social order, law and politics will be taken into account.

Finally, “Conscientious objection” will be developed, particularly with regard to abortion and euthanasia, and “Hippocratic Oath and neo-Hippocratic values”, in which its importance in health training and education will be addressed.

“I am particularly concerned that in the practice of medicine acts that violate our code of ethics can be trivialized,” said the president of the Madrid College of Physicians and one of the organizers of this event, Manuel Martínez-Sellés.

He has indicated that “many of the things we do today will be done by machines, but precisely for this reason what the doctor will specifically provide is human, compassionate and empathetic assistance.”

For Manuel Martínez del Peral, president of the Madrid College of Pharmacists, the co-organizer of this meeting, digitization and artificial intelligence are revolutionizing life and professional practice in almost all areas, including healthcare.

“There are more and more processes that are carried out through artificial intelligence and it is precisely for this reason that we must be able not to ignore the ethical and humanist component, especially in health professions in which we deal with people”, Martínez del Peral stressed. EFE
