A year of dormancy, what happened to her?

The first-generation ‘Miss Trot’ with explosive singing ability, singer Jung Mi-ae… She, who was loved enough to resume her activities two weeks following giving birth to her fourth child, announced her sudden cessation of activities in December 2021. She only reported that she had a health problem through SNS, but as time went on, countless rumors and speculations spread because she did not reveal a clear reason. A year following that, Mi-ae contacted the Human Theater production team. What happened to her?

In the past year, I visited the house of Ms. Jung Mi-ae, who was said to have built a wall with the world. Her husband, Seong-Hwan Cho (42), and their four children, Jae-Woon (16), In-Seong (8), Ah-Young (6), Seung-Woo (4)… It’s not a celebrity’s house that you can only see in magazines, but an ordinary house where you stir-fry with mischievous children every day. Instead of being a singer, she lived as ‘Jung Mi-ae, the mother of four children’, and she confesses her inner circumstances…

My stamina was low due to the busy schedule that I lacked even 10 parts of my body, and my immunity was low, so I was always living with small illnesses. In particular, the sores in the mouth did not get better for several months and tormented Mi-ae. Then one day, she hears something like a thunderstorm. It was a diagnosis that she might not be able to speak, let alone sing. She was in the 3rd stage of tongue cancer, and she was like an irreversible disease for the singer. It happened when the youngest, Seung-woo, hadn’t turned 11. Mi-ae had to undergo major surgery that lasted eight hours. She then had a third of her tongue removed.

Fortunately, I was able to speak, but the followingeffects followed. A third of her tongue was missing, and her face was disproportionately crooked, rigid at the slightest fatigue. It was hard to swallow the food, and above all, the pronunciation that was like an announcer was twisted and disturbed.

Recurrence is common, so I had to live in anxiety and fear every day for six months following surgery. Her self-confidence and self-esteem as a singer soon disappeared and the door to her heart was closed. It was her family who stood by her side. Her husband, Seong-hwan Cho, whom she met during her trainee days and raised her dream of becoming a singer together, stayed by Mi-ae’s side, crying and laughing with her struggling wife. That’s how Mi-ae is slowly returning to her normal past.

I didn’t want anyone to find out, so I shut myself in a small room and repeated the song to myself. She struggled to even open her mouth at first, but she practiced making her mouth twist and stiffen. After a year like that, Mi-ae stood on stage once more. The cheers of her fans were still the same, but her Mi-ae’s heart was not the same as before.

*Seolam[tongue cancer] : malignant tumor of the tongue

<정의> It is a cancer that occurs in the tongue and is a representative oral cancer. It most often occurs on the side of the tongue, but it can occur anywhere on the tongue. In Korea’s cancer incidence statistics (2002), cancers of the lips, oral cavity, and pharynx accounted for regarding 1.8% of all cancers. It usually occurs following the age of 40 and most often in the 60s.

<설암 원인>

The main causes of tongue cancer (cancer of the mouth) are smoking, drinking alcohol, and poor oral hygiene, often a combination of all three. Even if exposed to environmental factors, some people get cancer and some people don’t, so it is believed that there is a genetic influence on the occurrence of tongue cancer, but it has not been specifically identified yet. Other causes include chronic irritation from ill-fitting dentures, viruses (such as human papillomavirus), radiation or ultraviolet rays, and dietary habits and nutritional deficiencies.

<설암 증상>

– Ulcers in the mouth that do not heal following 3 weeks or more

An ulcer in the mouth refers to a break or break in the mucous membrane of the mouth, and the most common cause is inflammation such as aphthous stomatitis. Ulcers formed in one place due to stomatitis usually disappear within 1 to 2 weeks, but in severe cases, they may spread to other parts. However, if an ulcer in one place does not heal even following 3 weeks, it may not be a general inflammation, so it is good to visit a hospital.

– If a mass or swelling (swelling) in the mouth persists for more than 3 weeks

If something that is not normally felt in the mouth is touched, it may be a simple inflammation or a simple cyst caused by inflammation. However, if you think something is strange and you are confused whether it is original or new, compare the left and right. If it looks symmetrical, it is most likely normal, and if it is asymmetry or there is something suspicious, it is good to see a nearby clinic. Also, if there is swelling and it does not go away following 3 weeks, it is recommended to see a specialist.

– If a lump on the neck (cervical mass) does not disappear even following 3 weeks

Just because you can feel something new in your neck doesn’t mean you have oral cancer. Even if you only have a cold, the lymph nodes can be swollen and feel like a lump. If it is caused by general inflammation, it usually disappears within 3 weeks. However, if it remains following 3 weeks or if you feel that the lump has grown, it is better to see a specialist.

– Red or white spots on oral mucosa

Even if red or white spots occur on the cheeks or tongue, most of them do not know the cause or are likely to be temporary symptoms caused by changes in the mucous membrane due to chronic irritation. However, these mucosal changes can rarely be an early symptom of cancer or a pre-cancerous stage. Therefore, if you have never been diagnosed before, it is good to see a specialist, and if it is an old spot, it is better to have a biopsy if it has recently become thicker, looser, or wider.

– Tooth loosening of unknown cause unrelated to periodontal disease

If cancer of the gums grows into the root of the tooth, it can cause tooth loss even in the absence of periodontal disease. In addition to the symptoms of shaking teeth, additional checkups are needed if they do not heal for more than two weeks following removing the teeth. In addition, it may be accompanied by pain in the tongue or mucous membrane of the cheeks, and unpleasant bad breath (halitosis).

<설암 진단/검사>

A diagnostic oral examination is performed at the otolaryngology department, and a histological examination is performed to confirm the diagnosis. After the biopsy, cervical computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and positron emission tomography (PET, metastasis examination) are performed to measure the stage of the disease.

<설암 치료>

Surgical resection is the most important treatment. Usually, in the case of early tongue cancer, the cancer is resected and sutured by securing sufficient boundaries with the tumor, and when more than half of the tongue is removed, reconstruction is performed by transplanting flesh from other parts (arms, legs, etc.). If the normal part remains following surgery, there is no hindrance to daily life such as eating, except for a slight change in pronunciation. If there is or is suspected of metastasis to the neck (neck), surgery to remove the lymph nodes in the neck is performed.

After surgery, receive radiation therapy (6-8 weeks) and observe the progress in an outpatient setting. With the development of chemotherapy (chemotherapy), it is used as a treatment in place of surgery along with radiation therapy in advanced cancer, or is performed as an adjunctive treatment to surgery.

<설암 경과/합병증>

The cure rate for tongue cancer is highest when it is diagnosed and treated early. The progression of cancer is divided into 4 stages. The possibility of complete cure of oral cancer is regarding 50%, but if the tumor is confined to the tongue and is small within 2 cm (stage 1), it is cured more than 95% if it is detected and treated. (Limited to the tongue and 2 to 4 cm in size), regarding 70 to 80% of the disease can be cured.

<설암 예방방법>

The best way to prevent oral cancer is to avoid smoking and drinking, and to pay attention to oral hygiene and manage it. It prevents oral cancer as well as many other cancers and health problems. If you have not taken preventive measures so far or are at risk, you need to pay attention to early diagnosis while working on prevention from now on, just like other cancers. Oral cancer can be detected early compared to other cancers if you pay a little attention because the area where it occurs is easily visible and palpable.
