The robot as an essential element of the industrial production chain needs no introduction. Robots have been around and populating factories for more than five decades. They shine with their robustness, speed and tireless precision. They operate in environments specially designed for them and from which human beings are totally excluded. Very far from these industrial robots, android robots, or cyborgs – so sold, praised and feared in science fiction stories, which make almost everyone fantasize by their perfection, their perfect mimicry with humans without biological defects and their apparent immortality – are still only a sketch far from what we imagine. There are cyborgs in a few research labs, but they are not yet a perfect reproduction of humans, far from it. . Each of their appearances is often very noticed and very publicized, but they are ultimately very little or not at all present, whether at work, at home or elsewhere in our daily lives. These two large families of robots, industrial and androids, are not the only ones: for twenty years, there has also been a whole family of robots much closer to us, whether we are aware of it or not. It is these robots that we are going to focus on in this article, and more particularly those that are commonly called “social” robots: even if this term is not so well chosen, it is the most commonly used in the field, while “company robot” or “attendance robot” might be better names which are those adopted here.
What do these companion robots do, why are they so important in our current society and in that of the future? How are they made and what are the possible advantages and dangers of such machines? This is what we are going to detail in this article starting from the robots that surround us. We will then see the importance and role of design in the process of creating these robots by presenting the major current trends. Then we will explain the weight of social and psychological factors in interaction robotics. We will discuss how experiments in the field are generally conducted and what challenges they raise, before concluding on the future of interaction robotics.
