Human Rights Coordinator of Paraguay believes actions against the EPP are ineffective

Assumption, IP.- The Coordinator of Human Rights of Paraguay (Codehupy), which encompasses more than 36 networks and civil society organizations, describes as “inefficient” the action of the authorities in the fight against the Paraguayan People’s Army (EPP) guerrillas, who on Thursday killed a German couple.

The organization expressed its “deep concern” about the actions of the Joint Task Forces (FTC), the security body made up of police and military created in 2013 to specifically fight against the EPP.

“Once again, the inability of the State and its corresponding authorities to persecute the Paraguayan People’s Army criminal group is evident,” Codehupy said in a statement.

He also expressed his repudiation of the murder on Thursday of Germans Robert Natto and Erika Reiser, kidnapped and later murdered by the EPP during an armed clash with security forces.

Codehupy demanded from the Paraguayan state “a serious and responsible investigation of the crime”, as well as “the timely and appropriate prosecution and sanction” of its intellectual and material responsible.

However, he warned that this investigation should not serve as protection for the “repeated practices of police and military abuses” detected in the departments of Concepción (north) and San Pedro (center), where guerrilla activity is concentrated.

The organization also requested the implementation of a coordinated strategy between the Ministry of the Interior, the National Police, the Prosecutor’s Office and the Judiciary to confront the guerrilla, “within the framework of the defense and unrestricted respect for human rights.” .

The EPP has kidnapped police officer Edelio Morínigo for almost seven months and last Christmas they released a teenager after nine months of capture, according to the caracol.com.co portal.
