Like other countries in the world, Guinea celebrated the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This celebration took place at the headquarters of the High Commission for Human Rights in Conakry, in the presence of members of the government, representatives of the CNT, diplomats and human rights activists.

In his opening speech, the representative of the United Nations High Commission for Human Rights in Guinea, Aimé Ntumba, returned to the historic date of December 10, 1948. “75 years ago, something remarkable performed on the international stage. The world came together to adopt the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This moment followed a turbulent era marked by wars, genocide, nuclear threat and economic instability. Despite everything, nations have come together to make a solemn promise: to protect and promote the rights of every individual,” he recalled while deploring the persistence of human rights violations in many regions of the world.

“By adopting the universal language of human rights that promises freedom, equality and justice for all, we can overcome challenges that seem insurmountable. Together we can create a more peaceful and sustainable environment for our planet and its inhabitants,” he urged.

Presiding over the ceremony, the Secretary General of the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights, Ms. Irène Hadjimalis, said she was optimistic regarding the victory of human rights in the world. “I say, as far as I am concerned, that the struggle for human rights will be long, but it will, without a doubt, be victorious. In making this statement, let me conclude with this statement from Mr. Koffi Annan, former Secretary General of the United Nations, quote: “We know the problems that exist and we all know what we promised to accomplish. What we need now is not more declarations or promises, but action to keep the promises already made.” So, the time has come for action: Actions to give and guarantee dignity to all; Actions to protect all human beings, especially the most vulnerable. Let us remember that the celebration of birthdays is an auspicious moment or an exhilarating incident whose occurrence we must seize as a chance or a significant opportunity to reflect on our present and future achievements, learn from our mistakes and take courageous measures in favor of the progress and continuous change in depth so that our country goes through this transition successfully and that it is the last in our history. In this perspective, the task that falls to us and must mobilize us all, today, this year and the years to come, consists of applying the visionary words of the Universal Declaration to current global issues.

In Guinea, the celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights coincides with a socio-political crisis marked by the repression of demonstrations which caused the death of 37 young people in the commune of Ratoma.
