Closure Chronicles: A Taste of Kwun Tong’s Ups and Downs
Well, well, well! Just when you think you’ve got your ginger juice fix sorted out, Kwun Tong lays the smackdown with yet another closure. Yes, my friends, the Hulu Pavilion has shut its doors once more! It feels like a tragic comedy—when life gives you lemons, some people just decide to close up shop instead of making lemonade. Or, in this case, ginger juice!
Now let’s twist the narrative a bit. Back in February, we bid farewell to the Calabash Pavilion, a sweet shop that had been tickling taste buds for over 40 years. They say good things take time, but maybe in this case, they took a little too much time. The owners announced their retirement—presumably an invitation to a well-earned chardonnay pool party—but rallied to find a partner to carry on their legacy. They were ‘up and running’ again come March. Fast forward to now: and poof! Six months later, just like my ability to stick to a diet, it’s gone. What’s next? A ‘pop-up’ closure? I guess Kwun Tong just can’t help but keep us guessing!
Sticky Situations and Shuttered Dreams
Let’s dissect this whole ginger juice saga a bit further. In March, someone proclaimed, “I found someone who is willing to take over the gourd shop!” That’s great news! Or at least it was until it wasn’t. I mean, this is a bit like going on a first date and springing it on your partner that you really only like carrot juice. Surprise!
Here’s a little sobering tea (or ginger juice, if you prefer): it’s tough times out there. The pandemic hopefully belongs in our rearview mirror, but for these dearly departed establishments, it seems like the closure light is still blinking. It’s a perilous world for beloved local gems, and this was just a pair of unfortunate hiccups in the ongoing feast that is Hong Kong’s dining scene. How do you keep a family business alive? Keywords: “Not easy.” But if anyone has the recipe, we’d love to snag a bowlful of that magic!
In with the New…Reservation Platforms!
But don’t fret, foodies! In the midst of closures, a shiny new partnership emerged! The illustrious Yahoo Restaurant Reservation × OpenRice graced us with its presence! Now, if only we could get a reservation at our favorite spot without battling the app like it’s some boss level in a video game. Click-links and features suddenly make restaurant-hopping seem more like a chore than a delight. But hey, we love a bit of spontaneity, right? You could say it keeps our lives ‘spicy’!
The Ever-Changing Culinary Landscape of Hong Kong
With every culinary door that shuts, another adventure waits. We can count on Hong Kong to rise from the ashes of a failing ginger juice empire like a beautifully fried spring roll. Remember the burger steak wars? Or the endless buzz about that new café? It’s hard to keep up, but the best part? You’ve got a fanbase (that’s you!) eager to bite into every delicious update. The irony’s rich here—just like the sesame paste from our ever-elusive gourd shop.
So, as we mourn the premature end of Kwun Tong’s ginger juice and sweet treats, let’s also celebrate the evergreen dining experiences waiting in the wings. Who knows? Maybe we’ll find a new favorite that leaves ginger juice in the dust. But until that next grande reveal, we say: raise your glasses (of ginger juice, milk, or any other lovely beverage) high for the classics that are no more.

In March, I met someone who wanted to help me and graduated again after half a year.
Calabash PavilionAtIt started in Mong Kok in the 1980s and moved to Kwun Tong’s long-established Gourd Hall more than 20 years ago. It has been running a family business.
