Six people were injured, two seriously, when huge ventilation ducts fell into a crowded indoor swimming pool on Saturday in Aurora, Colorado.

The Aurora Fire Department said the equipment failure occurred around 9:50 a.m. in the morning when between 50 and 100 people were around or in the pool at the Gaylord Rockies Resort and Convention Center.

Of these, four sustained non-life-threatening injuries and two were in critical condition.

Slow motion drama

Images captured by Internet users and relayed by local media show a vast ventilation pipe resting on the ground and above the water.

“I was in the swimming pool […] when suddenly all the pipes and things started falling. Some fell in the sauna, where people had just gone,” Trevor Spykerman, a 12-year-old boy, told CBC News.

“Most of it all took, like, 5 seconds to fall off, and then it dragged the other pipes down,” Trevor continued, confiding that he felt like he was watching a disaster in slow motion and feared that everything the roof collapses.

Luckily, firefighters from the fire department were, by pure chance, on the site of the hotel as part of a drill. They were therefore able to rush to the scene of the tragedy in record time, while awaiting the arrival of reinforcements.
