Het Nieuwsblad specifies that the checks then consisted of checking the photo and the validity of the passport presented. No inspection for a possible report was carried out.
Between 500 and 1000 people would thus have boarded without adequate control. Most of the affected flights were bound for America and North Africa. Article nine would have been invoked at 10.30 p.m. and by 11 p.m. the bottleneck would have been resolved.
On the side of the federal police, however, it is emphasized that despite a relaxation of controls, the luggage would however have been correctly inspected, so that there was no risk that an explosive might be transported.
At present, no explanation has been given for these endless queues at Zaventem airport. All border checkpoints were occupied and there was no industrial action.
This Thursday, article 9 would once more have been invoked in order to reduce the long queues. Like yesterday, hundreds of passengers would have been allowed to board the plane without thorough checks. Other problems are expected tomorrow, with the start of the winter holidays.
