Huge price cut on a large electric car – but read the fine print

It is possibly the most talked regarding electric car in Denmark, even though there are only around 300 examples of it on the Danish roads.

Now the man behind the car company has a good offer for you. If you dare.

Because if you buy the car, it is the same as buying a lottery ticket. With very poor winning chances.

The fine print

The crisis-hit electric car company Fisker Inc., which was founded and owned by car designer Henrik Fisker, has just started a fierce fire sale to get rid of the cars that the company has in stock.

You save up to DKK 197,000 if you dare the fur and buy a Fisker Ocean storage car in Denmark. You just have to remember to read the fine print.

Because an important detail is hidden in a footnote on Fisker’s website.

Here it is stated that due to “the current economic situation” there is a risk that buyers will subsequently not be able to get the car serviced and “must expect a permanent loss of the opportunity to enforce a claim for material defects and warranty claims.”

Said in Danish: You should not expect that there is any warranty on the car.

The first copy of Fisker Ocean was delivered to a Danish customer in May last year. Here you can see Henrik Fisker, the man behind the company.

The expert’s verdict

That a factory-new car is sold without a safety net is unheard of, but illustrates very well how under pressure Fisker Inc. is.

The coffers of the big-investing electric car company are gaping empty, the debt is growing, and if large amounts of capital are not obtained quickly, suspension of payments – and eventual bankruptcy – is almost inevitable.

René Tønder is an independent strategic advisor and has followed the car industry closely for years. He has long been skeptical regarding Fisker’s chances of survival, and the fact that the company now sells its cars without warranty, he interprets as “Fisker now doesn’t even think they can continue.”

From the motorist organization FDM, it sounds like you have to be very careful if you fall for the temptation and buy a Fisker Ocean.

– Before buying, you should make a careful calculation of the car’s price and features, as well as the presumed lack of opportunity to advertise regarding any errors and the lack of opportunity for service in the future, as well as uncertainty regarding being able to buy spare parts and whether errors in the car’s software can be corrected, says Michael Ern Nielsen, lawyer at FDM.

The North Jutland buyer

A little outside Aalborg lives a man who last spring bought a Fisker Ocean in the top-equipped version for DKK 600,000.

He, and approximately 309 other Danes with a Fisker Ocean, must hope that the electric car company can handle the cuts. Otherwise, it can get really expensive.

In the event of a bankruptcy, they lose both the warranty and the right to claim, and that is probably the end of software updates for the car.

If the car breaks down, it can be difficult – or even impossible – to get repaired, and the value of the car will most likely plummet.

Until March 15 this year, Fisker Inc. only 1,300 cars delivered worldwide. And right now the entire production is suspended.
