(CNN) –– At least 8 people died following a large explosion that shook the center of Havana, Cuba, this Friday and destroyed the Saratoga Hotel, according to the island’s government.

The hotel, which was built in the 1930s and has 96 rooms, was reopened in 2005 following a renovation, according to its website.
