Hubert Nitsch becomes curator of the State Gallery of Lower Austria

According to a broadcast in Krems, the experienced art historian and theologian will curate the exhibition on the Lower Austrian honorary award winner 2023 in the fine arts category as the first project. The winner will be announced in early November, with the show opening on December 1st.

Born in Mistelbach in 1969, Nitsch studied Catholic theology, religious education and art history in Innsbruck and Vienna, as well as art education in Ruedi Arnold’s sculpture class at the Mozarteum in Salzburg. Since 2002 he has been working as a diocesan curator and employee in the art and culture department of the Diocese of Linz and has implemented contemporary designs in churches and church institutions with many renowned artists. He will retain this role.

Inventor of the “Tower Hermit”

For Linz, the European Capital of Culture 2009, Nitsch created one of the few sustainable projects with the “Tower Hermit” at the Mariendom. Fixed points in his concept for the Kunstraum St. Virgil, which he has also curated since 2001, are an artist-in-residence program and the series “sculptors as draftsmen”.

“Hubert Nitsch has a lot of experience in working with contemporary artists,” emphasized Gerda Ridler, Artistic Director of the State Gallery of Lower Austria. Nitsch, he has extensive specialist knowledge and a network of valuable contacts.
