Huawei is building a secret network for the chip industry

Yesterday, Bloomberg News quoted the Semiconductor Industry Association in Washington as warning that Huawei Technologies is secretly building a group of semiconductor manufacturing facilities across China in order to circumvent US sanctions.

The Chinese tech giant entered chip production last year and is receiving regarding $30 billion in state funding, the association said, adding that Huawei has acquired at least two existing factories and is building three more.

The US Department of Commerce had included Huawei on its export restriction list in 2019 due to security concerns. The company denies it poses a security risk.

According to Bloomberg, Huawei’s building factories in the name of other companies, as the Semiconductor Industry Association says, would enable it to circumvent restrictions imposed by Washington and indirectly buy American equipment for the chip industry.

Neither the Chinese company nor the association have yet responded to Archyde.com requests for comment.

The United States has placed Huawei on a trade blacklist, which prevents most suppliers from sending goods and technology to the company unless they obtain a license. Officials continue to tighten restrictions to prevent the company from buying or designing the semiconductor chips that make most of its products.
