Huawei and Vodacom Tanzania launch DigiTruck plan to promote an inclusive and sustainable digital Tanzania

Huawei and Vodacom Tanzania have jointly launched the DigiTruck program to provide digital literacy and skills to the people of Tanzania.

The initiative complements the Tanzanian government’s vision to promote innovative, inclusive and sustainable development through the use of digital technologies.

The official launch ceremony was hosted by Doto Masaka Bitko, Deputy Prime Minister of the United Republic of Tanzania. Also present were the Minister of Information Communications and Information Technology Jerry William Silaa; the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Tanzania Chen Mingjian and other senior guests from the public and private sectors.

“I am honored to represent the President of the United Republic of Tanzania at this historic event. I congratulate Huawei and Vodacom on this far-reaching initiative, which will greatly complement the government’s digitalization efforts. The data clearly shows that, As a country, we still have a lot of work to do in bridging the digital gap and improving digital literacy. It is clear that government and private sector actors need to work together to address this challenge. Tanzania is a large country, so I invite Huawei and its partners. The partners are considering using more DigiTrucks to reach more people and drive Tanzania’s digital revolution.

Minister of Infocomm and Information Technology Jerry William Sirah has reiterated Tanzania’s urgent need for digital and financial literacy so that the country can keep up with the ongoing digital revolution.

“The Government of the United Republic of Tanzania attaches great importance to the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), including digital skills, as the foundation for national development. We believe that the future of Tanzania lies in the hands of our young people, providing them with the necessary Digital skills are our top priority. To this end, the government has launched various plans, including policies such as the Five-Year Digital Economy Strategy 2024, which aims to improve the digital skills of the country, funded by Huawei and Vodacom. The launch will help strengthen our national digital capabilities and move Tanzania up in the world rankings.

Tanzania’s DigiTruck program aims to extend digital skills training to remote areas of Tanzania, especially to youth and women. This initiative is part of Huawei’s commitment to digital inclusion Technology 4ALL– Programs designed to improve equity and quality in education to support remote communities and underserved populations in Tanzania.

“The DigiTruck plan between Huawei and Vodacom is not only a key measure to continuously deepen the friendship and trust between the two peoples, but also a pragmatic cooperation to promote digital inclusiveness and sustainable development cooperation in the field of digital technology, with a view to” realizing Tanzania’s vision of digital transformation . Chen Mingjian, Ambassador of the Republic of China to Tanzania, said.

DigiTruck will travel across Tanzania in its first year, covering ten regions. It will leverage innovative ICT solutions to make quality education available to more people, especially students in remote areas. By the end of the second year, it is expected to cover the entire country, enabling thousands of Tanzanians to enjoy the benefits of digital education. The Managing Directors of Vodacom Tanzania and Huawei are committed to working together to make this program a real success in Tanzania.

The launch follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the two companies on February 15, 2024, paving the way for collaboration in the areas of corporate social responsibility (CSR), accelerating startups and digital skills.

In addition to Tanzania, Huawei has implemented the DigiTruck program in 18 other countries, benefiting more than 93,000 people around the world.
