Thus, in this list we first find all the photo, video or audio files which “describe beheadings or forms of torture that appear to be carried out by armed groups such as the Mexican and other drug cartels, Chechen fighters or the Islamic Statereads the HRW report.

But, still according to the NGO, there is also all the content that “concern foreign organizations including the East Turkestan Independence Movement, which the Chinese government describes as a separatist group; the World Uyghur Congress, run by Uyghur exiles, and a Uyghur-language program from Radio Free Asia, a US government-funded media outlet; which show pro-democracy audiovisual elements, such as “Gate of Heavenly Peace”, a documentary regarding the Tiananmen Square massacre during student protests in 1989, perpetrated by the Chinese government; or that mention the names of cities in Syria, including 2015 documentaries on the country’s history and two episodes of a popular Chinese-language travel show, “On the Road” (侣行), which contain references to the Syrian conflict“.

Finally, and it is on this last type of content that the NGO is particularly sounding the alarm, this list also identifies all the files that “feature common Islamic religious content, including readings from the Quran and wedding songs.

This last category of content would correspond to more half, 57%, of that list, according to HRW.
