This Monday morning, 32 5th grade students from Lou Redounet college, in Uzès, were vaccinated once morest human papillomavirus (HPV). The vaccination campaign began last Wednesday in the Gard colleges and will end before Christmas. 995 5th grade students in the department must receive the injection.
For some students, the injection was a small ordeal, for others, a formality. But for everyone, it was important to get this vaccine. “I do it to avoid transmitting cancer to women“, replies one. “I do it for my health, because it is recommended. My parents told me regarding it too“, explains another schoolboy. Of the 150 5th grade students at Lou Redounet college in Uzès, 32 were vaccinated once morest papillomavirus this Monday morning. Almost as many girls as boys.
The management of the establishment had informed the parents in advance so that they might give their authorization. Across the Occitanie region, 9,174 families have chosen prevention through vaccination for their child and have given their consent via the electronic registration form. On the other hand, 777 digital refusals were also recorded.
This vaccine is inoculated in 5th grade, from age 11, because this is an age when students have not yet had sexual intercourse and this is where protection is most effective. “The effectiveness of the vaccine is around 80-90% in prevention once morest cancers, and not only that of the cervix.“, reports Claude Rols, director of the Gard departmental delegation at the Occitanie Regional Health Agency (ARS). A booster will be administered in six months to have a complete vaccination schedule. Some college students are also vaccinated by their attending physician.
80% of young adults are exposed to papillomaviruses
Claude Rols and Christophe Mauny, DASEN du Gard (Academic Director of National Education Services), were in Uzès this Monday morning to mark the start of the vaccination campaign. “When we want to reach an audience, a generation, we know that we can go through school. 10 colleges in Gard are affected by this campaign between this Monday 13 and Tuesday 14 November“, indicates DASEN. A doctor and nurses are also present to supervise the vaccination.

Vaccination once morest HPV viruses is not obligatory but “recommended“, as Claude Rols points out. However, this vaccine, considered safe and effective, can prevent either cancers or pre-cancerous lesions which can be found in the urogenital, anal or oropharyngeal spheres. “Today, 6,400 new cases of cancer are recorded per year due to human papillomaviruses in France.“, says Claude Rols. He adds: “80% of young adults are exposed to papillomaviruses during their lives. They spread enormously.”
Gard below the national average
In most adults, this goes away within a few months. But in some, it can create precancerous lesions. “Studies carried out in many countries show that when populations are more than 80% vaccinated as in England or Australia, there is a direct correlation with the incidence of this type of cancer. We manage to stop the broadcast“, continues the director of the departmental delegation of the ARS.
Over the past ten years, six million doses have been injected in France. In Gard, we are a little below the national average. The objective of ARS Occitanie is to vaccinate 30% of the population of middle school students. “In Gard, 40% of young girls are vaccinated, compared to 12% of boys. We see that there is a gap“, notes Claude Rols. Coverage remains insufficient but is progressing. He concludes: “When you have this type of product that protects well, it’s an opportunity that you have to seize. Not all countries are so lucky.”
