This is one of the new features of this school year: the launch of a vaccination campaign once morest HPV, human papillomavirus, in middle school. All 5th grade students are affected. The agreement of both parents is essential. At this age, two doses are necessary, six months apart.

At Saint-Exupéry college in Rosny-sous-Bois, around fifteen students were vaccinated, or one in ten. Another fifteen did it in a doctor’s office. Which makes a total of 20% of this age group immunebelow the objective of 30% set by the Ministry of National Education.

Little-known viruses

Papillomaviruses remain little known, notes Michèle Lorenzi, nurse. “They are responsible for female and male cancers“, specifies this advisor to the Créteil rectorate, “cancers of the cervix, vulva, anus, and certain ENT cancers“. HPV is transmitted sexually, but it is interesting to get vaccinated youngbecause we then offer a better immune response.

Doctor Vijaya Kanthan was already vaccinating at the city’s medical center, but with this free campaign, he believes he can reach “more young people, who would not have come to the cabinet on their own“. An information letter was sent to families in June, sessions were also led at the start of the year by school nurses. Concerning the success of the campaign, Michèle Lorenzi assures us: “We will wait until the end of this first edition to draw conclusions and possibly find avenues for improvement.“.
