Finding Serenity in the Classroom: How Yoga Transformed a District
As superintendent of the North Adams Public School District for the past eight years, I’ve witnessed firsthand the transformative power of incorporating yoga and mindfulness techniques into our school community. My own journey with yoga began 30 years ago, initially drawn to its physical benefits. As our teachers grappled with unprecedented challenges in early 2021, light years before tangible support systems existed and the pandemic recovery felt far away, we needed a holistic approach to well-being. What began as a personal form of stress relief for me, blossomed into a district-wide effort changing the lives of students, teachers, and even our local community.
From My Mat to the Classroom
After the pandemic forced schools to close, our community returned For many of us, there was an overwhelming sense of uncertainty and particularly after the euphoria of returning to normalcy started to wear off, bringing a redundant return to classrooms. Recognizing the need to prioritize mental and physical health, I enrolled in a 200-hour teacher training program focusing on mindful techniques.
My intention wasn’t to become a yoga instructor, but I wanted to provide teachers with another tool to manage stress and build resilience.I knew classrooms needed a boost, so I offered a free class to alleviate teachers feeling burnt out. We met in the library for six weeks, creating a safe distance-friendly haven where we could remove our masks and simply breathe.
The response was so profound that when the program ended, all 10 teachers were eager to continue – not just to partake but to learn how to weave these practices into their classrooms. Today, nearly 50 educators are certified Breathe for Change facilitators, maximizing their own well-being while enriching their students’ learning experience.
Ripple Effects: From Improved Attendance to a Calmer Classroom
Schools where teachers regularly use mindfulness techniques have seen a dramatic decline in chronic absenteeism. Take Colegrove Park Elementary for example: a 11% rise last year landed us in the top 10 for statewide attendance. This recognition talent from the NBA Champion Boston Celtics with a signed basketball.

The evidence isn’t just found in attendance figures. One teacher shared that since introducing mindfulness techniques in her fourth-grade classroom, she hasn’t had to issue a single disciplinary referral. In a district where 71% of students have unique needs observer reinforcement, this is truly transformative. Seeing this in action – that’s what truly resonates with me as a former science teacher. It’s tangible proof of the program’s success.
H2>Beyond School Walls: A Community Practice
Our impact extends beyond the classroom walls. Creative teachers have seamlessly incorporated mindfulness practices into their daily school routine. One teacher run for students. It was so popular that Drury High School now offers yoga regularly. I even volunteered to lead a session for training: I asked our football coach co-present for teaching assistants. Seeing him say, “I know you need this, !Removed for us to connect and build a culture of support.
With a background in special education, I’ve seen the incredible impact on young adults in our 18bof developing tailored breathing exercises for these students.
