On “Why Ukraine Must Not Lose This War” (Editorial, SN, 2/18):
Although Ukraine must not go to war, it can only lose it, with the portrayal becoming ever more contradictory and diffuse. The well-armed nuclear power Russia, allegedly on a military level with the USA, poses a threat to the entire western world in the usual illustration and has even triggered a neutrality debate in Europe.
If current operational reports are to be believed, some of the Russians are in retreat, have supply problems and even have to recruit reservists. Where is the inner logic of these connections when Russia ultimately cannot even cope with Ukraine, a much smaller country with regarding a tenth of Russian military spending, has to put up with tactical defeats and the war is supposed to last for months or even years?
