Meta is currently working on a new way to protect locked chats. To access it, users will be able to enter a personalized password, a new layer of security.

For a few months, there has been a feature in WhatsApp that allows you to lock conversations. These disappear from the list and to access them, you must enter your PIN code or identify yourself using your fingerprint or your face (via facial recognition). Meta wants to go further, with a personalized password.

As usual, this is the specialized media WABetaInfo which reveals this feature in development at Meta. WhatsApp is expected to soon add a page that will allow users to create a passcode, password to access the list of locked chats. WhatsApp will even suggest using a word or even an emoji, to access it more quickly.

The idea is to add a layer of security to your smartphone over the instant messaging app. That is, even if someone knows your PIN, has registered their fingerprint or face on your smartphone, they will not be able to access these hidden chats, even if they know regarding their existence.
What WhatsApp will change regarding locked chats
However, this is not the only change that would be made to the functionality. The main criticism made by users is first of all the fact that the “ connected devices ”, or companion devices, are not supported. These are smartphones and computers that are not directly associated with your account, but are connected to the phone that stores your account.
On these devices, hidden conversations… are not hidden. They appear directly in the list of all your discussions and are not protected.
WhatsApp would fix this issue in a future update using this passcode, since chat locking will be synchronized between all devices.
