Released in theaters in March 2019, Captain Marvel offers a jump back in the Marvel universe, located in the 90s. What require some adjustments, in particular for Samuel L. Jackson, alias Nick Fury, damn rejuvenated for the occasion.
In these troubled times, we need (super)heroes! That’s good, for a few years now, the big screen, and by extension the small one, regularly offers to discover or find all of a gallery of fearless and – almost – blameless vigilantes. Thanks to two companies that have become true legends: Marvel and DC Comics. Two competing stables which each have their champions: Iron Man, who had an unexpected impact on the life of his interpreter Robert Downey Jr., and the whole Avengers band on one side, Batman and his many comedians or Superman, in particular embodied by the impressive Henry Cavill, on the other. Sometimes, newcomers flex their muscles, like Aquaman, the champion of underwater sequences.
Captain Marvel, a superheroine of the 90s
At Marvel, one of the latest arrivals is called… Captain Marvel. A character not to be confused with another improbable hero, who has become absolutely essential in a few years, with in particular an appearance in the series What if…? And a solo adventure released in theaters in March 2019, simply titled Captain Marvel. In this new opus, Carol Danvers, a fighter pilot, becomes a superheroine and finds herself in the middle of a merciless fight once morest the Skrulls, an alien species seeking to seize a destructive weapon. Energetic and determined, Danvers / Captain Marvel is embodied by Brie Larson, a multi-talented actress, who had to prepare seriously for her first action film. She underwent intensive training for nine months and even learned to fly an airplane. The action of the film taking place in the 90s, another actor had to work on his appearance.
Samuel L. Jackson, twenty-five years younger in Captain Marvel
In the cinema, the magic of special effects sometimes makes it possible to achieve real miracles. Thereby Terminator 2 revolutionized the history of cinema thanks to the talent of genius Stan Winston. Equally remarkable are the “tricks” of The Planet of the Apesor the different techniques used to make Paul Walker appear on screen in Fast & Furious 7, despite the actor’s tragic death during filming. Nothing so dramatic in Captain Marvel, but the temporality of the film still required some adaptations. Thus Samuel L. Jackson, who portrays SHIELD agent Nick Fury in most Marvel films since the first Iron Man (2008), was digitally “rejuvenated” by twenty-five years to appear alongside Carol Danvers. A performance accomplished by the company Lola VFX, which had already worked on the astonishing physical transformations of Brad Pitt in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2009) or makes Chris Evans lose weight in Captain America (2011).
