Last year iOS 16 introduced the ability to crop subjects from our photos and it was fun, but it wasn’t quite clear what to do with them. That changes in iOS 17, which is still in public beta at the moment. You can download it now or wait for the full release this fall, but either way, you’ll find an excellent way to use your scraps of photos, turning them into stickers. • Start by opening the Photos app and finding the photo you want to turn into a collage. • Long press on the subject until a glowing border appears around it, then tap on the Add Sticker option. • A tray containing your existing stickers will appear, and the photo clip will be added. • You can add an effect now or revisit it to do so later. You can retrieve your stickers at any time using Apple’s iOS keyboard. Just tap the smiley face icon where you can access emojis and swipe to the left of the frequently used panel. There you’ll find any stickers you’ve used recently, as well as a shortcut to access all your stickers. Just tap on the sticker you want to use, but be aware that outside of iMessage, it will only appear as PNG images. The best way to use them is in the walled garden of Apple’s messaging app: • Open iMessage chat. • Click on the plus sign icon to the left of the text box and select Stickers. • Tapping on the sticker will add it to your iMessage text. For something even better, you can long-press on the sticker you want to use to drag and drop it into your conversation. You can also paste it on a specific message if you want to use it like a click reaction for comical effect. Some pro tips: • Adding an effect to your sticker may sound cliche, but it’s actually pretty cool. Either tap on Add Effect when you first create your sticker or long press (and let go) when you get to your stickers to see effect options, The outline adds a white border for a sharper, poster-like look, and if you choose the Puffy or Shiny options, it will use your phone’s gyroscope to change the reflection like you’re actually moving it under a light source. Try it, it’s cool. • You can turn your live photo themes into animated stickers. Follow the same process as with a regular photo, but on the Add Effect sticker page, make sure the Live option is enabled to animate them and use it as you would any other sticker.
