How to transfer files via AirDrop over the internet

Apple has long offered a quick and simple option to share things with other users wirelessly: AirDrop. Until now, this feature necessarily required you and the other person to be relatively close for the files to be sent properly.

However, this changed a little with the arrival of iOS/iPadOS 17. From now on, you can continue sending files even when you are away from the other person, using the internet.

See how to take advantage of it! ????

Compatibility

The feature is available on all devices running at least iOS/iPadOS 17.1. Additionally, both people’s devices need to be signed into an iCloud account.

How to enable/disable AirDrop via the internet on iPhone/iPad

By default, this function is already activated in iOS 17.1. However, you can check if it is actually active or even disable the use of the internet to make transfers via AirDrop.

To do this, open Settings and go to Geral » AirDrop and uncheck the option next to “Use Cellular Data”.

In practice, there is no difference in using AirDrop. You can start transferring whatever you want between two devices, and if they move apart, the process will then complete over the web instead of simply stopping with an error.

Simple, right?! ????
