With the release of macOS Sonoma 14.1 to the general public, Apple has made a considerable change for those who use cameras or video output devices.
From this version onwards, the system will not allow you to use equipment of the type that does not use modern system extensions — introduced in macOS Monterey 12.3, according to Apple.
These extensions brought, among other things, support for displaying the camera’s privacy indicator in the menu bar (through a little green dot) when it is in use. Therefore, if the camera or video output device is running older software, it cannot be used on macOS 14.1.
To resolve this issue, Apple recommends that you restore support for the legacy video device on your Mac to continue using the camera or device — if its official software has not yet been updated to macOS 14.1, of course. See how to proceed!
First of all, restart your Mac and put it into Recovery Mode. Then click Options » Continue. From the utilities menu, choose Terminal to enter the command below:
system-override legacy-camera-plugins-without-sw-camera-indication=on
Press the return key. After exiting Terminal, click the Apple menu and choose “Restart” to return the system out of Recovery Mode.
If you want to return to the default settings, just follow the same tutorial described above and type this command:
system-override legacy-camera-plugins-without-sw-camera-indication=off
Once this is done, a notice that device support has been restored will appear in System Settings » Privacy and Security » Camera.
