It can sometimes happen that files stored on your USB key are no longer accessible. In this case, it is possible to try to repair file errors using the Windows Diskpart utility. If the operation fails, then it’s time to reset your device to get it working once more. Futura explains how to do it.

Bad surprise, you want to access a file stored on your USB key, but it does not appear. The situation is not critical yet, as there is a tool in Windows to fix file errors on your device. If it does not solve your problem, then you should at least try to put the key back USBUSB in working order. Futura details the different manipulations to carry out these repairs.
Fix file errors
To fix file errors on your USB flash drive, the first step is to open File Explorer. To do this, use the “Windows + X” shortcut. The quick links menu will appear, select “File Explorer”.
The explorer launches, find the location of your USB key and right click on it. In the context menu, click on “Properties”.
The windowwindow repair tool appears. In the “Tools” tab, click on “Check” in the “Error checking” section.
Windows tells you if any errors have been detected. If this is the case, then click on “Analyze and repair the drive”.
Wait for the analysis to complete. At the end, a report is displayed showing you the changes made if you click on “Details”.
If the tool cannot recover the file you need, then that means your USB drive is corrupted. In this case, you will have to create a new partition on your device.
Recreate a partition on your USB key
Diskpart is a utility that allows you to modify the partitions on a disk, whether it is a hard disk or a USB key. To start it, use the shortcut “Windows + X” and choose “Run” from the quick links menu to open the command prompt.
Now write “cmd” in the text field to launch the command prompt. Proceed to the next step by clicking on “OK”.
The Command Prompt window appears. Write Diskpart then press “Enter”.
An additional window appears for Diskpart. First of all, you will have to display the list of disks detected by Diskpart. To do this, write “list disk”, then press “Enter”.
Now identify your USB drive. To do this, rely on the size of your disks. In the example, it is disk 1.
Then select your USB key by entering the command “select disk x” where “x” corresponds to the number of your USB key.
Diskpart confirms that the chosen disk, i.e. your USB drive, is now selected. Then proceed to clean your USB key by using the “clean” command. All the files contained on the key will be erased.
Diskpart notifies you when cleaning the USB drive is complete. It is then time to create a primary partition. The command to enter to achieve this is “create partition primary”.
Diskpart notifies you when the partition has been created. You must then format your USB key. In the example, we format it with the NTFS file system, particularly suitable for USB keys used in a Windows environment. If you plan to use it on other devices (TV, multimedia box, game console), then it may be wise to opt for an alternative file system (exFAT in priority if the hardware is compatible, otherwise FAT32).
The command to format in our example is “format fs=ntfs quick”. Optionally replace ntfs with the file system of your choice.
The operation takes a little time. Diskpart notifies you when the operation is complete. All that remains is to assign a letter to your USB key using the “assign” command.
That’s it, your USB key should now appear with its storage space fully available. If the USB drive is still not working following these operations, then chances are the problem is hardware related. In other words, you will have to claim the guarantee of your USB key or buy one.
