Pigeons can not only destroy garden or patio plants, but can also cause considerable damage to a home, as their droppings are highly acidic and corrode stones, metals or even concrete.
Ryan Jenkins, pest control specialist from Sefton Meadows Garden Centre, told express.uk that hanging shiny objects can scare birds away from your garden.
He stated: “Shiny objects might seem like something that would attract animals (a rumor that started with the supposed attraction of magpies to shiny objects), but the opposite is true. When it’s sunny, the shiny objects reflect the light towards the birds, which scares them away. Some theories also claim that birds are afraid of their own reflections! This may not be the most attractive solution, but it is convenient, especially in fields and around vegetable and flower beds.’
Shiny objects startle pigeons as they create reflections or sudden flashes of light, while sudden movements can signal danger to birds as they may suspect a predator is nearby.
When objects are hanging, they can also sway in the wind, which can mimic the way birds of prey such as owls move, which will also cause pigeons to avoid an area.
All you need to do is hang old CDs or DVDs in your garden, but also use cans, aluminum foil, aluminum pie plates or any other shiny material that will also produce the same desired effect.
Some people also buy shiny ribbons, also known as scare tape, to hang on fences or trees, which will also scare away pigeons.
However, be careful not to hang anything made of glass, such as mirrors, around your garden as it can break or even become a fire hazard during hot days.
