How to react if you receive a message from a stranger on WhatsApp

WhatsApp may be a secure instant messaging service, but it is still possible that you receive messages from a stranger for no reason. In this situation, how to react?

Never initiate a conversation

The worst part, when you receive a call from a stranger on the Meta app, is sending them a message to ask them what they want from you or who it is. While it may be tempting to find out who has tried to contact you, don’t send a message without receiving one first.

If it’s someone you know who got your number, they will most likely message you if you don’t pick up. If it’s a stranger, initiate a conversation and that’s the door to a possible scam.

Avoid clicking on a link received

Sending a link from someone you don’t know from Adam or Eve is quite suspicious. Typically, WhatsApp offers a preview of the received link giving you a clue. So avoid clicking on this link, you never know what it may contain.

If you clicked, there should a priori be no risk. The simple fact of integrating a website on your smartphone without interacting with it is, strictly speaking, not very dangerous. However, the problem would be much greater if you entered private data on this site or were asked to log in with a Gmail, Facebook, Apple account, etc.

In this case, contact the competent authorities to temporarily block your access, such as the bank if you have encrypted your banking details.

Be wary of the turn of the conversation

There are signs that are unmistakable, and especially subjects that are indicative of a possible scam. If, following a few messages, the person tells you that they have a problem with their phone, or that for one reason or another you need to send them money, then something is wrong.

The best way to thwart any scam attempt is to set a trap for the person you are talking to. If he pretends to be someone you know, ask him a question you know the answer to and he will get it wrong:

  • “You work ?”
  • “No, I’m on leave” or “Yes”

These questions, while the person is still in school or unemployed, will automatically reveal the person’s identity to you.

Block and report the sender of messages

After all these steps, if you realize that your sender is indeed a stranger and that his messages are potentially intended to scam you, block him, it’s the quickest solution to have peace of mind.

To do this, open the conversation and tap the message sender’s number at the top of the screen. Scroll down to the bottom of the menu, where you will find To block et Report.

You can choose to just report the person or, by blocking them, WhatsApp will also offer to report them. The advantage here is that the application will not ask you for a particular reason for this report, but will simply analyze the latest messages received to estimate whether or not to ban this number.
