How to protect your account in online payments

(PLO)- Many banks provide security features for credit cards and ATM cards to help users’ accounts be more secure.

Currently, online payment services are on the rise, more and more consumers are choosing them because of their convenience and modern technology. Besides convenience, if consumers are not careful and do not fully understand the security features, it is easy to lose money in their accounts.

Especially at the time of Tet, the higher the demand for online shopping, the more account holders need to actively learn ways to protect their accounts in electronic payment transactions.

Learn more card features before use

Ms. Thu Tam, from Binh Thanh District, Ho Chi Minh City, said that in the past, she mainly used cash payment in transactions. Recently, she chose to pay by bank transfer, swipe card, scan QR code. Not only does she have a salary account via ATM card, she also has international credit cards, domestic credit cards, etc. Although she was advised by the bank staff regarding the multi-layer card security feature, in reality, she still appeared. In many cases, the money in the cardholder’s account is “evaporated” at midnight with online transactions.

“The bank grants a high limit for my credit card, if the user is not careful, the damage to the cardholder’s property is huge,” said Ms. Tam.

Ms. To An, Tan Binh District, Ho Chi Minh City, added that she had previously registered to buy a package of English learning services for children via the app and paid via an e-wallet connected to a domestic payment card. (ATM) of a bank. After one year of use, this service package automatically deducts money on the card without the account holder’s authentication. The amount that she was deducted was 630,000 VND. She contacted the e-wallet unit to find out the reason, and learned that because she did not cancel the payment extension function, the account will automatically be deducted in the next payment period.

According to Ms. An, to ensure their rights, card users should fully understand the card’s features, especially safety features to protect their accounts.

Protect your wallet online like a wallet

Mr. Pham Duc Duy, Director of Card Center, Sacombank, said that the payment account is also the customer’s wallet. No matter how carefully you manage your hand-held wallet, when using a payment account, you also need to actively learn regarding such card security measures.”

“When losing a card, the account holder needs to call the switchboard to request a temporary card lock. But there is a simpler way that you can do a temporary card lock and unlock the card right on the app. Currently, almost all banks incorporate this feature on the Mobile banking application. This operation only takes 1-2 minutes for first-timers, but for those who have mastered it, it only takes a few seconds,” said Mr. Pham Duc Duy.

As a regular user of the temporary card lock feature, Mr. Tran Thanh Hai in District 9 shared: When opening a card and bank account, each customer will be provided with a hard card and an account number. The card number can be used to transfer money or to pay online bills, buy goods online. Meanwhile, the account number can only be used to receive money and transfer money. When temporarily locking the card, all withdrawals, online purchases and sales with the card number will not be possible, but the online money transfer and receipt transactions with the account number will still work normally.

“So, not only when I lose my card (ATM card, credit card…) do I use the temporary card lock feature on mobile banking, but I always have the habit of locking the card when there is no need to pay. via card, when needed will unlock. This method at first sounds time consuming and complicated, but it actually only takes a few seconds, but it gives me a much more secure feeling. These habits help me reduce risks when using online payment methods,” Hai emphasized.

Ms. To An added that following the incident of being charged on the card, she had a habit of turning off the auto-renew feature for products and services for free trial. This routine keeps me from being charged on my next billing day or when my trial ends.

One more practical experience shows that many customers when paying for food services at restaurants, bars, etc., always have the habit of giving credit cards to the service staff to swipe for them. Instead, the cardholder should directly swipe the payment card to ensure that card information is not revealed or leaked.•

How to protect your online wallet?

As a regular user and performer of electronic payment transactions, Ms. Mai Khanh from District 3 shares her experience of using a bank card.

According to Khanh, if the ATM card is lost, the crooks want to use the card to buy goods, they need to declare the password. But with credit cards, it’s different, when buying online, the system only requires entering the cardholder’s name, card number, validity period, expiration date and card verification code (CVV/CVC). All necessary and sufficient information is printed on the front and back of the credit card. If all of the above information is disclosed, the risk of card information being stolen and fraudulent transactions arising is great.

“To be on the safe side, I always memorize the last three digits on the back of my credit card, then erase or seal it. This does not affect direct payments. If the card is lost, the crooks also “give up”, unable to spend online due to the lack of authentication code information. This is also a way to protect my online wallet,” said Mai Khanh. PV
