The summer heat, while bringing with it relaxation and play, can be a health hazard for children if the necessary precautions are not taken. THE heat stroke and dehydration are two serious conditions that can be caused by excessive exposure to high temperatures.
To protect your children from heat stroke:
1. Keep them cool:
Dress them in light, light-colored clothing.
Put a hat and sunglasses on them.
Offer them shade, ideally under trees or umbrellas.
Give them frequent cool showers or baths.
Encourage them to play in shady areas, especially during the hottest hours of the day (11am – 4pm).
2. Moisturize them:
Give them plenty of water or diluted fruit juice, often and in small amounts, even if they are not thirsty.
Avoid soft drinks and sugary drinks, which can make it worse dehydration.
Watch for signs of dehydration, such as dry mouth, dark urine, dizziness and fatigue.
3. Be alert:
Never leave your children alone in a closed car, even for a few minutes. The temperature inside the car can rise very quickly and endanger their lives.
Monitor the weather forecast and adjust your children’s activities accordingly.
Teach your children how to seek help if they feel sick or dizzy.
4. Pay attention to vulnerable groups:
Babies and young children, the elderly and people with chronic illnesses are more vulnerable to heat stroke and dehydration. Pay special attention to these groups.
If you have any doubts regarding your child’s health, do not hesitate to contact a doctor.
Remember: Prevention is the best cure.
Tip: Create one “cool pack” for your kids, with water, fruit, hat, sunglasses and a small water sprayer!
