How to properly protect your smartphone from the cold

Smartphones are not equipped to withstand low temperatures. It is therefore important to take good care of it…

Keep your smartphone turned off outside

If it starts to get really cold, don’t bother, and leave your phone turned off for the moment. Indeed, as 0°C approaches, the lithium-ion battery does not feel at its best. It is also possible that your phone will turn itself off if you use it in very cold weather, and will not turn back on until it is warm. It is even possible that it will permanently damage the device. Don’t panic if it’s in your pocket, however, your body temperature should allow it to hold without difficulty.

The smartphone warm in its case…

If you absolutely need to go out with your phone, then you will need to keep it warm. First of all, if you don’t have a case for your phone, it’s time to buy one: in addition to protecting the device in the event of a fall, it will also maintain some of its temperature. Better: some models can also heat your device.

…and in its cover!

But that’s not all: in addition to cases, there are also insulating thermal protective covers that keep your smartphone warm. They are even much more efficient than hulls and therefore very practical if you are going this winter to a very cold destination like Canada or Finland.

In your bag or close to your body

If you have a tightly closed bag or backpack, it can be handy to slip it in there. And otherwise, keep your phone in a pocket close to your body heat. What is safe is that you should avoid carrying it in your hand while walking in the snow.

A backup battery

As mentioned earlier, the battery discharges very quickly when in contact with the cold. Also, if you are absolutely going to need your phone, a good solution, although a little expensive, is to invest in a backup battery, which you charge fully, and keep in a warm place, to take it out to recharge your smartphone.

In case of a problem

If your smartphone has ever given up on you due to the cold, or it has fallen in the snow, bring it back inside as quickly as possible, and let it warm up to room temperature. Above all, do not use any artificial means of heating (such as a radiator for example). And if the phone still doesn’t work, don’t hesitate to go see a technician!
