Each orchid is unique and may require special care. For the multiplication of an orchid, it is therefore important to monitor your plant during this stage and to adjust the care according to its specific needs so that it is in good health.

To propagate orchids from flower stalks, we can use different elements. One of the tricks that works the best is using the skin of half a potato. This organic substance is very effective in stimulating the rapid growth of germs.

Here are the instructions for using it properly:

  • Take the skin and put it in a blender with 200ml of water.
  • Filter the preparation and choose the flower stems of the growing plants. It is necessary to choose them well because they are the ones that will receive the nutrients present in the potato skin.
  • Take a stem with many small shoots and cut it across using a cutter.
  • Place the stalk in a small glass jar and pour potato juice into it. Allow the stem to absorb the necessary nutrients for 20 minutes.
  • Pour a teaspoon of cinnamon into a glass.
  • Add a little hot water and stir to dissolve the cinnamon.
  • Filter the resulting liquid and add 0.05 liters of water.
  • Soak a cotton ball with this solution and gently rub the stem previously placed in the water with the potato peel juice. This will allow you to properly disinfect your orchid.
  • Seal both ends of the stick with the band of a candle.
  • Then place the moss in a plastic pot.
  • Moisten with cinnamon flavored water.
  • Place the sealed rod on top of the foam.
  • Cover it with a transparent film to maintain humidity.
  • Then, using a toothpick, make holes in the plastic film to allow good air circulation.

Under what conditions does an orchid cutting work and stimulate the propagation of the plant?

Be sure to place the tray in a cool, well-lit place, in a room with a temperature of around 25°C. The plant should absolutely not be exposed to sunlight. Take the time to continually check the moisture level of the soil and water your orchid regularly with water.

After only one month, you will see the result: the plant will start to sprout and small shoots will appear on the stem! The germination of the plant requires regular spraying to keep the stem constantly moist and stable. You can therefore transplant the orchids in a suitable substrate, sprinkle them with moss to promote their growth and flowering. You can transfer the plant outside with its pot.

After 4 months, you will end up with a beautiful orchid, with invigorating leaves and roots. You will thank us!

Can an orchid leaf be cut?

Yes, by removing the leaf from an adult, healthy plant. It involves separating the leaf with a piece of the stem using disinfected secateurs. Dry the leaf for 8 hours then lubricate with a root former. Dissolve an activated charcoal tablet in a glass of water then place the rod in the solution.

Choose the substrate that suits the orchid

It is called “Orchid Soil” and it is the most suitable since it is rich in maritime pine bark.

The technique for properly repotting the orchid

  1. Start by gently removing the orchid from the initial pot so as not to break the roots;
  2. Untangle the latter with a rinse in order to eliminate the stuck pieces of soil, which can prevent the plant from breathing inside the pot;
  3. Install the plant in its new pot;
  4. Add a mix of fresh bark around the plant;
  5. Water your plant and following a week or two, water once more.

As you will have understood, with a little patience and care, this method of plant propagation will allow you to create new orchids from existing flower stems. We can not wait to see the result !
