Assassin’s Creed is one of Ubisoft’s most successful franchises. With the first title released in 2008, it’s been many years with different releases and protagonists. Exploring different historical periods, and going through many changes along the way, the saga created by the French giant even has a release order that does not exactly follow the chronological order of the facts, which can be a little confusing.
How to Play Assassin’s Creed in Chronological Order
Check below the exact sequence to play all Assassin’s Creed in chronological order, that is, following the date of events / periods and not the order of release. Remembering that we are going to mention only the main games of the franchise, leaving aside spin-offs and smaller titles.
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey / 431-404 a.C
The first game in the franchise in chronological order is Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, being the title that goes deeper into the past. With the player assuming the role of a descendant of the great King Leonidas, Odyssey delivers a journey even before the creation of the famous order of assassins.
Being one of the RPG’s in the Ubisoft franchise, the game has the current structure and gameplay of the saga, with the elements that were introduced in Origins. To start the adventure, you can choose whether you want to play with Kassandra or Alexios, but remember that Ubisoft has already confirmed Kassandra as the canonical protagonist.

Assassin’s Creed Origins / 49-43 a.C
About 400 years following the events of Odyssey, we have the plot of Assassin’s Creed Origins. The first game with RPG elements in the franchise showed the origin of what would become the order of assassins. With Bayek of Sewa being the protagonist of the adventure, Origins explains elements that are important to the origin of the creed as we know it in the previously released games.
To combat the Order of the Ancients, Bayek creates The Hidden Ones, the organization that would become the Brotherhood of Assassins much later. Despite being a general change in the structure of the saga, Origins also marks the beginning of everything we know with regard to the history of the franchise.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla / 872-878 d.C
When it decided to completely change its franchise, Ubisoft also decided to go back to the past. With that, the three oldest games, chronologically, are the most recent trilogy released by the French developer.
Valhalla is set centuries following Origins, but still much earlier than what we’ve seen in other games in the franchise. In the Norse Adventure, you take on the role of Eivor and embark on a Viking journey in which the war between Hidden Ones and Ancient Ones is seen in a cursory light.

Assassin’s Creed / 191 d.C
After the RPG trilogy, you’ll be able to pick up a sequence of games in their own release order, starting with the first Assassin’s Creed. Starring Altair, one of the most important characters in the franchise, the game shows the well-known struggle between Assassins and Templars, with both orders strengthened and existing for a long time.
While Altair stars in the adventure in the past, with mechanics totally focused on stealth, the game also shows events in the present with Desmond Miles being the main focus. Assassin’s Creed shows that the struggle between the two orders continues even today. The game also introduces players to Abstergo, an organization that is dominated by the Templars.

Assassin’s Creed II / 1476-1499 d.C
After Assassin’s Creed, you’ll follow the release order and embark on the first journey starring Ezio Auditore, considered by many to be the best character in the franchise. Over a thousand years following Altaïr, you take on the role of a new assassin in the Renaissance period, with the plot showing young Ezio seeking revenge once morest the Borgia following a tragic event.
Assassin’s Creed 2 can be considered the best title in the franchise to date, being the game that actually started the golden age of the saga developed by Ubisoft.

Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood / 1499-1507 d.C
Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood continues the story of Ezio Auditore, now a little more mature and experienced. Understanding better what the Brotherhood of Assassins is all regarding and following in their footsteps as a member, Ezio continues his battle once morest the Borgia, with the emergence of a new villain in the franchise.
Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood has many similarities to its predecessor, but features a larger world and new mechanics, such as the ability to ride a horse.

Assassin’s Creed Revelations / 1511-1512 d.C
Continuing in order of release, you’ll finally reach the end of Ezio’s saga. Revelations marks the end of the character’s trilogy, taking the killer to an unprecedented place in the franchise. Following in Altaïr’s footsteps to discover more regarding his ancestor’s order and teachings, Ezio heads to Constantinople, all the while caught in the midst of the eternal war between Assassins and Templars.
Connecting Ezio and Altair, Assassin’s Creed Revelations is an excellent ending to the saga of the most charismatic character in the franchise, while also showing important elements that are connected with Desmond Miles in the present day.

Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag / 1715-1722 d.C
Interrupting the sequence of games in release order, you must play Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. The title starring Edward Kenway shows a new plot in the present day, without the presence of Desmond, and in the past it presents the story of a pirate who ends up getting involved with the war between Assassins and Templars in a random way.
Black Flag was the first installment in the franchise to leave the war between the organizations a little to the side, but it didn’t stray as far from this part of the plot as the more recent games. As he begins to become involved with the conflict, Edward grows closer to the Brotherhood as he discovers more regarding the conflict.

Assassin’s Creed: Rogue / 1752-1776 d.C
With Shay Patrick Cormac, Ubisoft delivered a plot that portrays the Templar order in another way. With the Brotherhood of Assassins making serious mistakes under Achilles, Shay revolts and ends up turning once morest his former comrades.
In Assassin’s Creed Rogue, we hunt those who in previous games would have been considered our allies. The plot is efficient in trying to show that both sides can have good or bad points of view in the conflict.

Assassin’s Creed III / 1754-1783 d.C
To continue the franchise in chronological order you must go to a title released before the last two games on the list. Set years following the events of Black Flag and Rogue, Assassin’s Creed 3 shows Connor Kenway’s journey in search of revenge once morest Charles Lee.
Assassin’s Creed 3 introduced characters that would feature prominently in AC Rogue, namely Achilles and Haytham Kenway, Assassin and Templar respectively.

Assassin’s Creed Unity / 1776-1800 d.C
After the third numbered game in the franchise, in chronological order we have Assassin’s Creed Unity, a title that also marked a change in the gameplay of the saga. As the first AC of the eighth generation of consoles, Unity modified combat and parkour, in addition to introducing other new mechanics.
Set in the French Revolution, the game has Arno Dorian as its main protagonist. It is possible to see similarities between Arno and Ezio, whether in the personality or even in the history of each character, while Unity delivers a plot focused on the conflict between Assassins and Templars.

Assassin’s Creed Syndicate / 1868 d.C
With two protagonists, Assassin’s Creed Syndicate is set in Victorian England and marks the last game in the franchise in chronological order, that is, for now, no other game in the saga took place following the events of Syndicate.
In the plot, we see the brothers Jacob and Evie Frye fighting their enemies on a journey of revenge, something very common in AC, while both try to restore the strength of the Assassins in London.
