How to overcome it for personal growth? Angela Losada explains

In this episode of Efficientlythe coach of mindfulness Ángela Losada explains that the fear of rejection is an obstacle to reaching new goals and does not allow personal growth. That’s why she shares a strategy for overcoming fear of rejection and other tools for responding positively when you get ‘no’ for an answer.

Why do we fear rejection?

The human being is a social being and being rejected, in any scenario, is perceived as a moment of vulnerability. In fact, this fear of rejection, according to a study by Personality and Social Psychology Review, It is an evolutionary tool whose objective is the adaptation of an individual to the community, by avoiding being excluded.

In addition, in 2011 a study of Cell Press evidenced that social rejection generates a physiological response, that is, there is a sensation of physical pain. This is because both types of pain – the one caused by a physical injury and the one caused by a social component – share neural networks. This explains why the most common response to rejection is aggressiveness, since being rejected is perceived as a threat to survival.

The above conclusion also encouraged researchers to explore the factors that can affect physical responses and found that these same factors can increase sensitivity to social pain. In addition, those people who are more sensitive to social pain are also more exposed to physical pain in the face of rejection, in other words, the pain index is proportional in both cases.
