Android phones usually come with a limited number of buttons and most of them are not changeable unless you follow unofficial solutions. However, on Samsung Galaxy phones, the side key can be changed. By default, it’s assigned to open Bixby (when held down), but it can also be changed to function as a power key, like on phones from other OEMs.

The side key on Samsung phones can also be used to open apps, but in a different way than the long press function. If you are curious how to do it, check out the guide to open apps using side key on Samsung phones.

One UI is arguably one of the best choices Samsung has ever made. Since its release a few years ago, Samsung has continuously improved the One UI interface, making it more feature-rich and incorporating almost all essential functions.

The ability to customize the buttons for tasks beyond the functions assigned to them by default is one of the features that make Samsung phones stand out. Of course, there are many alternatives to customize the buttons to your liking on other devices, but this possibility is officially available on Samsung phones, at least for the side button.

Open the Settings app on your Samsung Galaxy. Scroll down and look for advanced features, open it.
Here you will find a lot of options, press the side key to open its options.
Below the side key, you’ll see Double tap, and Tap and hold. By default, double tap is disabled, enable it by setting the Switch to On.

Now when you press the side key twice, the app you selected opens.
