How to measure sunlight exposure time with Apple Watch

A myopia is one of several problems that can affect the eye health. Estimates show that it affects more than 30% of the world’s population.

One of the ways to prevent this from occurring in children is to expose them to Sun light — the recommendation is that they spend 80 to 120 minutes exposed, every day, to help reduce the risk of myopia. In the case of adults, this number is at least 20 minutes per day.

To help avoid myopia (and also astigmatism), Apple implemented a new metric in watchOS 10 and iOS/iPadOS 17: Exposure Time to Sunlight. After updating your devices, it starts to be registered automatically by the watch (without you having to do anything), using the brightness sensor present in it.

Here’s how to check it! ????

Compatibility

The ability to measure sunlight exposure time is only available on Apple Watches Series 6 or later, in addition to the SE (2nd generation) and both generations of Apple Watch Ultra.

To make sure the feature works properly, make sure the front of your Apple Watch is clear so it can capture data.

How to check Sunlight Exposure Time

On your iPhone/iPad, open the Health app (Health), tap the “Explore” tab and select “Mental Wellbeing”. Then, choose “Sunlight Exposure Time” to check all the data captured by the Apple Watch through a graph.

In the same section, you can also add this to your favorites (so that the data appears highlighted, in the “Summary” tab), and also see all the data and data sources.

How to disable Sunlight Exposure Time measurement

You can do this using your iPhone or Apple Watch. On your iPhone, open the Watch app, tap “Privacy” and uncheck “Sunlight Exposure Time”.

On your watch, open Settings, go to Privacy and Security » Health » Exposure Time to Sunlight and uncheck the same option.
