To benefit from the ecological bonus, an electric car must cost less than €47,000. But we learn that the options are not to be included in the calculation!
Since January 1, 2023, all electric cars over €47,000 have been deprived of bonuses. Or almost. Because it is possible to benefit from the bonus with a more expensive vehicle which is stored and thus falls below €47,000. Example at the moment: the Ford Mustang Mach-E starts at €52,990 list price, but Ford applies a discount of €7,200. He is thus at €45,790 and is therefore entitled to the bonus.
And that’s not all. A poorly understood rule changes an important aspect. While we thought, and so did the manufacturers, that the options were to be taken into account in the prices, this is ultimately not the case. Clearly, we thought that if the choice of an option raised the limit of €47,000, the bonus was lost. Well no. And this was clarified by a decree published in the Official Journal in December… 2022.
But this went a little unnoticed at the time and, above all, poorly deciphered. The decree thus specified what should be included in the price which determines access or not to the bonus. There is thus the cost of the battery, the possible discount and the “intrinsic” equipment. Either the standard ones for the chosen finish. And therefore “non-intrinsic” equipment is not to be taken into account, that is to say the options.
An aspect which is not specified on the government sites presenting the bonus rules. It was finally Tesla a few weeks ago who found this solution. On its site, you can add options to a Model Y Propulsion at €45,990 and keep the bonus. We can therefore take the Ultramarine Blue paint at €1,600, the 20-inch rims at €2,100 and the improved semi-autonomous driving at €7,500!
It’s actually a strange tactic to avoid moving upmarket. For models which only have their starting version under €47,000, you can opt for this one and add unlimited options and thus configure yourself an equivalent to a high-end which would not have the bonus.
Example with the BMW iX1 eDrive20 which costs €46,900 in basic version. If you opt for the xLine model, you are at €49,550, therefore without bonus. But you can take the basic model and add options, for example the sunroof at €1,550, and keep the bonus!
This “discovery” will make those who can benefit from it happy. Those who would not have benefited from the bonus because of options which would have exceeded €47,000 have up to six months following invoicing to assert their right. For those over six months, it’s lost!
