I’m sure that following checking out our version of how to make caramelized onions, you’ll never want to do it any other way. This is because it has an incredible flavor and texture, as well as being simple to make.
Caramelized onions
I’m sure you’ve tried some sandwich or dish with juicy caramelized onions and thought? How do I do this at home!
From now on, it is important for you to know that it is possible to make a version with just onions and olive oil. I’ve made it myself several times, as I explained in this recipe here.
But, without a doubt, the flavor of this version is richer, as well as the wetter texture. In addition to being ready faster than the simplified version.
What onion to use to caramelize?
Actually, whatever! You can make this recipe with either yellow onion, the type we use, or red onion. This actually has an even more delicate and slightly sweet flavor, so it might be a great option.
Don’t worry too much regarding the color, as the purple one often loses its color following cooking, as it will be the reduced brown sugar and balsamic vinegar that will color and caramelize your onions.
How to Store Your Onion
My tip is to always make this recipe in larger quantities. Especially if you intend to use it in more than 1 preparation in a short period of time. This is because it is delicious and stays great stored in the fridge.
To always have your onion ready, check out some precautions not only regarding storage, but also tips for keeping it ready for consumption whenever you want:
- Ideally, you should store it while it is still hot, to avoid the deterioration process. In other words, let it cool a little and put it in the fridge;
- However, I don’t recommend freezing. This is because during the defrosting process the texture of the onion can change a lot;
- Use a hermetically sealed and extremely clean pot;
- If well packaged, it can last up to 10 days refrigerated;
- When ready to consume, separate the portion you want and heat it for a few minutes, either in the microwave or in a frying pan (if necessary, add a little water).

Instructions
