Dehydration occurs when the body does not have enough water to function properly. It is normal for our bodies to lose fluids during the day, since we replenish it by drinking water and eating food.

Losing the slightest amount of water in our bodies immediately produces a dehydrating effect, and it doesn’t take a heat wave to feel the effects.

A person can be dehydrated if they experience headaches, dizziness, fatigue or thirst, reports ‘The Independent’ newspaper.

These symptoms also include less frequent urination, a dry mouth (or tongue), sunken eyes or cheeks, and a sunken soft spot on the top of the head. It is possible that no tears flow when you cry.

Symptoms depend on age. Dehydration is especially dangerous for young children and babies who may not be able to clearly indicate that they are thirsty. Older people are also at risk for more serious effects.

How to treat dehydration? Simply by drinking water. Other different treatments exist, depending on the age and the seriousness of the situation.

For mild cases, a good bottle of cold water is the way to go, but sports drinks containing electrolytes can be just as useful.

For more severe cases, you should contact your doctor.
