How to insulate a wooden garden shed?

Rather than being used only as a place of storage, the wooden huts can become rooms in their own right to create a workshop, an office or even a space for leisure. But to work, work or relax there all year round, it is still necessary to properly insulate this type of shelter in order to limit the drop in temperature during the cold season. This will also protect your tools or belongings from humidity, cold and even heat in summer.

Insulate the walls

Several materials can allow you to insulate your shed. Glass wool or rock wool are suitable solutions, both quite economical and easy to install. Linen wool or hemp wool are, for their part, ecological and efficient. Let’s also mention polystyrene, which insulates effectively while being quite thin (therefore ideal for not wasting too much space).

For more practicality, choose insulation in the form of rolls or panels.
Measure, cut to size and place them between the posts of the shelter. Then add a vapor barrier, which will prevent moisture from infiltrating the insulation and causing it to mold. On top, finally lay the chosen interior lining (wooden panels, paneling, metal plates, etc.).

Good to know: leaving a small layer of air between the insulating layer and the covering reinforces the thermal insulation.

Insulate the roof

The roof is the surface most exposed to the weather and the sun. It can be insulated during or following construction of the shelter.

During assembly, start by laying a vapor barrier film on top of the plates that form the roof. Then insert rock wool between the rfollowings, always starting at the bottom of the roof. If you have opted for thin insulation, unroll it on the roof, then simply staple it.

Then install an under-roof screen that will protect the interior of the room once morest water ingress, snow infiltration, dust, etc. Finally, affix OSB plates (panel of oriented wood strips) or chipboard on top, which will accommodate the roof covering.

Insulate the floor

Cold and humidity also pass through the ground. If your wooden garden shed is not yet built, consider raising it to improve the insulation. If you already have a concrete slab, attach joists (pieces of wood similar to a cinder block, a rfollowing or a cleat) to it, spaced out and evenly, build your shelter on it and insulate the space. between the slab and the floor of the cabin. For good performance, select a liner that is at least 50mm thick.

If the shelter is already in place, you can use hard insulation (such as slabs of extruded polystyrene or biological fibers), to be placed directly on the ground, which will then be covered with a floating floor, for example.

If you prefer a fixed and more stable floor, install the joists in a grid pattern and insert the insulation between them. The floor can then be fixed directly to the cleats.
