All the departments of the former Rhône-Alpes region are on red alert for the tiger mosquito. Concretely, this means that in these areas it is “present and active”. To get rid of it, there are habits to adopt and above all, everyone must get started.
Established permanently in France since 2004, the tiger mosquito never ends with its progression in mainland France. Today, more than half of the territory undergoes its law each year from April to October.
It must be said that the pest can be dangerous, hence the fact that it is subject to special monitoring. “It is a vector of potential viral diseases such as chikungunya, dengue fever or the Zika virus“recalls the Rhône department in a prevention press release. For the time being, no case of transmission in mainland France has been detected.
“The tiger mosquito can be recognized by its small size, its white scales present on the head, thorax and legs. It has a diurnal activity, with a peak of activity at the end of the day. It is possible to report your presence via the Portal of the National Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health Safety“, recalls the department.
A few simple actions can destroy its spawning grounds, and thus prevent its proliferation:
- empty saucers, vases and outdoor buckets,
- cover all water reserves,
- remove abandoned objects in the garden,
- check the proper flow of water in the gutters
Attention, it is especially necessary that these gestures are carried out by everyone. It only takes one of your neighbors not to follow these recommendations for the mosquitoes to come back.
This is due to the fact that ‘the tiger mosquito only moves within a radius of 25 to 50 meters around its birthplace: it is born and bites in the same place.“
