How to get a Real ID if you have a Green Card? (+Documents)

The United States government will begin requiring a Real ID, starting May 7, 2025, to board flights or enter federal buildings in the country.

Travelers must present their driver’s license or an identification card that meets Real ID guidelines for domestic travel.

The Real ID Act, passed by the US Congress in 2005, seeks to produce identification cards that are secure and difficult to counterfeit.

The Real ID identification must be processed at the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) offices of the state in which the applicant lives.

In addition to the permanent resident card, the following documents qualify as a valid and unexpired Form I-551:

• A foreign passport with a current temporary I-551 stamp, or with a temporary I-551 notation printed on a machine-readable immigrant visa (MRIV) with a U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) admission stamp, within the stated period of validity, which is normally one year from the date of the DHS stamp;
• A DHS Form I-94 or Form I-94A with a photograph and a current temporary I-551 stamp.
• A U.S. Department of State Form DS-232, Unrecognized Passport or Waiver Cases, with a temporary I-551 notation printed on a machine-readable immigrant visa (MRIV) with a DHS admission stamp and a validity period, which is typically one year from the date of the DHS stamp.
