Word, Excel, Photoshop, InDesign… Major software might seem essential. However, there are many quality alternatives and some of them are even free. How to easily spot them?
The way software is distributed has changed a lot in recent years. Around the millennium, it was common to acquire software such as Word, Photoshop or other in the form of a CD. We owned it for life and might theoretically install and reinstall it at will when we changed computers. And then, a new model appeared: the use of subscription software. Nowadays, it is common to pay an amount ranging from 6 to 30 euros or more per month to be able to use the applicationsapplications of MicrosoftMicrosoft or Adobe. We can regret that it is often no longer possible to acquire a program once and for all as was previously possible.
That’s not all. For a student or someone starting an activity, the cost of such software may seem excessive.
There is also a situation to take into account: certain software simply ceases to exist because its publisher ceases its activity. It is therefore essential to be able to find an alternative.
Alternative software
However, it turns out that there are many alternative software programs to those of the major publishers. Some have become famous like Gimp which is a completely decent free alternative to Photoshop, or LibreOffice which offers most of the features of a program like Word. Obviously, these applications do not have the latest new features, such as the artificial intelligence functions of recent versions of Microsoft OfficeMicrosoft Office or Photoshop and which are certainly very appreciable, but not essential for everyday needs.
It turns out that a site lists alternative versions of existing or defunct software: alternativeto.net. We will see how to put it to use.
From the AlternativeTo site, type the name of a software program in the search box. The site then displays, under the description of the reference software, a more or less long list of alternative applications.
Just below, you see a line on a blue background with the words “ Filters » (filter). You can enable some of these filters, including Free if you’re looking for a free alternative, Windows or Mac if you only want to see programs from one of these environments appear. The down arrow allows you to select other options: AndroidAndroidiPhone, iPadiPadetc.
The list of software appears below, ordered by the number of likes obtained. A short description follows – in English only.
Access specific software
If one of the applications appeals to you, click on its name. A description is offered to you but above all, a button “ Official Website » gives you access to the software page. You will then discover that it is sometimes in French and that the software concerned is itself French-speaking software.
From there, all that’s left to do is download the application in question!
