From the iPhones 13, Apple brought a very cool novelty for those who enjoy recording videos with their smartphone. It’s regarding the cinema mode (Cinematic mode). With this, it is possible to manually adjust the focus point and the depth of field of the footage — all in a super easy and intuitive way, of course.

In addition to being able to edit it directly from the Photos app, there is also the possibility of doing so using the iMovie — either via iPhone/iPad or Mac.

Next, see how to proceed! ????

How to Edit Cinema Mode Video in iMovie on iPhone/iPad

Start a new project, tap the clip captured using Cinema mode, and tap the feature button (on iPhone, it’s at the bottom of the screen).

  • Drag the slider to change the depth of field intensity.
  • To add a focal point, scroll the video timeline so that the white playhead line appears where you want to add it. Then tap on an object tracked on the screen to bring it into focus and turn yellow in the timeline.
  • To lock focus on a tracked object, tap the Cinema mode button and the object shown to lock focus on the currently focused object; To do this on an object that is not currently in focus, tap the object so that the yellow brackets surround the object, then tap it once more.
  • To lock focus at any point in the footage, tap the Cinema mode button and tap any untracked object on the screen. With that, a little yellow square with little lines will indicate that the blocking is activated and a manual focal point, in yellow, is created in the timeline. This focus will remain on the selected object/area until the next manual focus point or the end of the clip.
  • To remove a manual focal point, tap one of them at the bottom of the clip in the timeline and the “Delete” button displayed on the clip in the timeline.
  • To reset all manual focus points, tap “Reset” on the right of the slider.

How to Edit a Cinema Mode Video in iMovie on Mac

Upload the movie in Cinema mode in iMovie on Mac. Then select it in the timeline and click the resource button located above the viewer (top left). With this, the depth controls will be displayed.

To adjust the depth of field, select the Cinema mode feature icon above the viewer, check “Depth of Field” and adjust the slider next to it.

  • To add a focal point, use ⌃ control, click on a clip in the timeline and choose the “Show Cinematic Editor” option from the shortcuts. If you prefer, you can also do this using ⌥ option ⌘ command F. Scroll through the timeline so that the playhead appears where you want to place the focal point. Click on a tracked object in the viewer (yellow brackets show which tracked object is currently in focus and white ones, additional ones that are not in focus).
  • To lock focus on a tracked object, open the Cinema mode editor and click on the object in the viewer with yellow square brackets around it to lock focus on the object currently in focus. To lock focus on an object that is not currently in focus, click the object so that the yellow brackets surround the object, then click it once more.
  • To lock focus on any part of the video, open the editor once more and, in the viewer, click on any object or area that is not being tracked.
  • To remove a manual focal point, click on a yellow dot and select “Delete Focal Point”.
