Apple offers an interesting new feature: liquid detection in the USB-C ports of its Macs. With macOS Sonoma 14.1, users get a new layer of protection for their devices.
This new feature relies on a background process called “liquiddetectiond”. Its role is to monitor the USB-C ports of MacBooks and identify any exposure to liquid. This can be very useful for many users. Especially for those who are clumsy or tend to work with drinks near their computer.
Welcome protection
Particular point of attention: macOS Sonoma does not alert you directly in the event of liquid detection. Instead, it collects information that will be useful to Apple technicians. They will thus be able to identify possible problems. It works differently than iPhone or iPad.
Apple takes liquid detection seriously. In fact, the Cupertino company has just added information on son site internet : “Liquid Contact Indicators (LCI) are built into today’s Mac laptops, as well as some Apple-branded wired and wireless keyboards. They make it possible to determine whether this equipment has come into contact with a liquid.”
How to access this new function?
If you have a Mac with macOS 14.1, you can check how the “liquiddetectiond” process is working in Activity Monitor. To access the Activity Monitor, simply go to the Utilities Menu. Once in Activity Monitor, the “liquiddetectiond” process can be found in the Disk tab.
It is not yet known whether Apple will add a notification in a future update of macOS Sonoma to warn users that one of the USB-C ports has an anomaly. All with a view to complete transparency.
