How to Create Multiple Spaces on a Hard Drive

2023-04-16 22:02:11

Partitioning is a procedure that allows the user to configure different spaces on a single hard drive. Although advantageous, the technique requires a bit of technical know-how, so follow the guide.

There are several reasons why someone might want to partition their hard drive. Indeed, the operation makes it possible to have several storage spaces on a single disk. This confers various advantages. The most obvious being that it allows the user to install multiple operating systems on their computer. However, it can also be a question of a desire to separate the different uses of the machine. This generally improves the performance of the computer, since the space on which it searches for data is smaller.

Finally, partitioning avoids unpleasant surprises in the event of a system crash. Instead of losing all of your data, only the affected part disappears. Moreover, it is then possible to reinstall the system from another partition.

How to do it ?

In itself, partitioning your hard drive is not very complicated. A few steps are enough to organize your disc according to your desires. Note that we perform the maneuver under Windows 10.

To get started, right-click on the start menu and tap on “Disk Management”.

In the window that opens, select your primary partition. You will recognize it by the letter (C:) which characterizes it. Right-click and choose “Shrink Volume”.

On the new dialog, adjust the highlighted value depending on how much space you want to get. Note that the “Available shrink space” value indicates the maximum space you can free from (C:). As for the value indicated in “Total size in MB following reduction”, this specifies the space remaining on (C:) once the operation is complete. When you’re done, click “Minimize”.

Then right-click on the newly cleared space. It is easily identifiable thanks to the black color that it sports, as well as the mention “Unallocated”. After right-clicking, select “New Simple Volume”.

The Simple Volume Creation Wizard opens. Click “Next” and confirm or change the volume of space you chose earlier.

This time, the Wizard asks you to select a letter to name your new partition. Knowing that your main partition is named (C:), the computer offers you (D:) by default. However, you can select another letter if you feel like it. Then confirm the order by pressing “Next”.

Penultimate step, give a name to your new partition (Work, Personal…). Then click “Next”.

You are there. The last window is a summary of the procedure and your choices. Click on “Finish” to start the procedure for good.

After the partition is finished formatting, you can store whatever you want on it. Just as you can repeat the operation if you want to create other partitions.
