In an age of constant technological innovation, the social media landscape is ever-changing. The latest news comes from Meta, owner of Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp. This Thursday (06), the technology giant announced the launch of Threads, a new platform that promises to be a strong competitor to Twitter.
Threads is a conversational text application that allows users to write, like and share real-time text updates, thus enabling mutual engagement. This concept, similar to that of Twitter, places the platform as a direct alternative to Elon Musk’s social network. Threads even incorporates the denomination “threads”, which on Twitter is used to structure the text to be published.
The look and operation of the platform, according to images released on the Apple Store, appear to be identical to those of Twitter, further increasing the comparison between the two. Additionally, Threads will be connected to Instagram, which suggests that Meta’s photo-sharing network will play an important role in the new social network. Below, check out how you can create a profile on this new social network.
Necessary time: 5 minutes
Go to App Storeand in the search bar, type Threadsand tap To obtain;
When you open the app, if you have an Instagram account logged into your smartphone, the app will give you the option to Login with Instagram. If you want to create from another account, tap switch account;
Soon following, customize your profile: Choose the Name, Bio, and Your Profile Link. Or, tap Import from Instagram. Once that’s done, tap advance;
On the next screen, choose whether you want to make your profile Public or Private. In the Public Profile option, anyone inside or outside Threads can view, share and interact with your content. In the Private Profile option, only approved followers can see and interact with your content. After choosing the best option, tap advance;
Then select if you want to Follow the same accounts you follow on Instagram. If desired, tap follow all. If you only want to follow certain accounts, select them manually;
Afterwards, the application will present a screen counting How Threads works. After reading the instructions, tap Sign in to Threads;
Ready! Now you can enjoy your new social network.
Why is Meta launching Threads?
Meta’s response to the launch of Threads seems to be tied to the recent controversies surrounding Twitter. Since Elon Musk acquired the social network last year, the platform has faced a series of problems, including technical failures, content moderation difficulties and controversies surrounding the “absolute freedom of expression” policy declared by the new owner.
At a meeting in June, Chris Cox, chief product officer at Meta, described Threads as “our answer to Twitter.” This highlights Meta’s intention to compete directly with Musk’s platform, seeking to attract users unhappy with the recent changes on Twitter.
Threads in action
Similar to Twitter, Threads allows for the sharing of texts, images and responses in real time. In addition, the app includes reply, like, share and repost buttons, elements already well known by users of social networks.
Regarding profiles, they are divided into two columns: threads (with all posts) and replies. This is also similar to how Twitter works. However, one aspect that deserves attention is what Threads’ timeline algorithm will look like, a detail that can differentiate it from Twitter.
Launch and Participation
Threads was launched in Brazil on July 6th, and is available at the Apple Store. New users will be able to access the network using the same Instagram account login and password, in addition to keeping the same username.
Privacy
According to Meta, privacy on the social network may include aspects such as purchases, location, contacts, search history, identifiers, confidential information, health and fitness, financial information, contact information, user content, usage information, history of device navigation and diagnostics. This broad approach reinforces the importance of transparency and user control over their own information.
