Chances are that your Playstation 5’s HDR settings aren’t suitable for your TV.
Perhaps you are one of the (few) lucky ones who managed to get one despite Sony’s supply difficulties. But, since you own your PS5, chances are you’re not playing with the right HDR settings configured.
Indeed, the Sony console is particularly renowned for its very good management of HDR, digital techniques for correctly managing the differences in brightness in a fixed or moving image. The PS5 thus supports HDR, but your television must be compatible with this technology, and especially HDR10, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision.
Television screens have a brightness power defined in nits (cd/m²). Unfortunately, it’s quite possible that you’re underutilizing the TV’s capacity and some nits end up on the floor.
Reconfigure PS5 HDR
By default, the Playstation 5 offers an HDR configuration screen. By increasing or decreasing the brightness of the screen, you will be able to change the brightness so that a gray sun is barely visible. But with Sony’s recommendations in this menu, the blacks won’t be deep enough and the whites won’t be bright enough. That’s why there’s a really quick little trick that can improve the PS5’s HDR even further.
To do this, go to the settings of your PS5, then to Screen and video. Stay on the menu Video output and select Adjust HDR. In the first setting, the Playstation 5 will ask you to adjust the brightness so that the sun is slightly invisible. Don’t listen to this advice and make the sun totally invisible, so that you can’t see it at all. Proceed in the same way in the other two menus.
Thus, make the sun completely invisible on all three screens. Blacks will now be deeper, whites brighter and colors much more vivid!
